A Donner Party camp site is extant at the Donner Camp National Historical Landmark at Alder Creek, near Truckee, California. The ill-fated Donner party camped just east of Donner Pass during the winter of 1846-47. The party was attempting to emigrate to California. Poor expedition planning caused the party to be trapped by a series of Sierra winter snow storms. The party missed passable snow conditions by one day. The Donner party is noted for implied survival cannibalism.

Be sure to also visit the nearby Donner Memorial State Park for a historical display.
