A most fascinating tour through the world's largest open pit gold mine is available in Lead, South Dakota at the Homestake mine. Although the mine is no longer operating, much of the equipment is extant. The Homestake mine pioneered many open pit mining techniques.

Sadly, two things are missing from the tour. One is a walk through some historical underground tunnels, closed for safety reasons. The other item found missing is a tour of the famous Homestake Gold Mine Sewage Treatment Plan. A tour of the Sewage Treatment plant would be extremely interesting since it contains state-of-the-art cyanide removal equipment. Cyanide is used in removing gold from slag.
