Edward A. Murphy
Tribute by Jeffrey Sward

"Murphy's Law" is not just an expression, it was actually invented by Captain Edward A. Murphy, an Air Force engineer. The phrase was concocted between 1947 and 1949 when Murphy worked at Edwards Air Force base on experimental airplanes.

The original quote is "if there's any way they can do it wrong, they will" or alternatively "if there is any way to do it wrong, he'll find it." Over time the quote has transformed through popular usage to: "if anything can go wrong, it will."
